Magnus Larsson

Conductor

Danish conductor Magnus Larsson is rapidly emerging as one of Scandinavia’s most compelling young conductors.

Dual-based in Berlin and Copenhagen, he works across opera and symphonic repertoire with a core focus on the Romantic era. Known for luminous orchestral colour, clear architecture and singer-led phrasing, he brings a Romantic sensibility anchored in Nordic clarity and warm sonority, and appears regularly with leading orchestras and opera houses across the Nordic region and Central Europe.

Alongside this core, he is at ease in contemporary Scandinavian music and concept-driven projects.

In the 2025–26 season, Larsson conducts concerts with several orchestras that have invited him back, including the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, the Odense Symphony Orchestra, and Norrlandsoperan, alongside projects with the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra and others.

His breakthrough came with his 2021 debut at the Royal Danish Opera conducting Nielsen’s Maskerade, praised for its vitality and precision. He quickly returned for Shostakovich’s The Nose (2022) and has since contributed to productions including Mozart’s Così fan tutte and Dominick Argento’s Postcard from Morocco. In 2023, Larsson attracted significant attention for his daring re-imagining of Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo with Copenhagen Phil at Teater Sort/Hvid. Other highlights include Nørgård’s Gilgamesh at the Rued Langgaard Festival, Nuit des Hommes at the Njord Festival, and Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at Svendborg Opera.
In Sweden he has worked with GöteborgsOperan (Gothenburg Opera), Wermland Opera, Norrlandsoperan, Malmö Opera, and Folkoperan in Stockholm.

On the concert platform, Larsson works regularly with leading Nordic orchestras, including the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, the Copenhagen Phil, the Odense Symphony Orchestra, the Gävle Symphony Orchestra, the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, and the North Czech Philharmonia, among others. His programming embraces both the classical canon and new music, including premieres such as works by Bent Sørensen at the DR P2 Prize Concert (2021) with the Odense Symphony Orchestra, and concept-led projects like Copenhagen Phil’s “60 Minutes of…” series.

Magnus Larsson’s artistry has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Carl Nielsen Talent Prize (2022), the Léonie Sonning Talent Prize (2020), and the EMA First Prize at the International Opera Conductor Competition in Prague (2017). He was also a recipient of The Young Artistic Elite Career Scholarship from the Danish Arts Foundation (2020) and the Arne Hammelboe Travel Grant (2021) from The Danish Conductors Association.
He holds an Advanced Postgraduate Degree (Soloist Class) from the Royal Danish Academy of Music, where he studied under Giordano Bellincampi and Michael Schønwandt, as well as bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.
He has refined his craft further through masterclasses with esteemed conductors such as Alexander Vedernikov and Fabio Luisi.

Born in Denmark in 1992, Magnus Larsson began his musical journey as a violinist and pianist before turning to conducting at the age of only 21.

Beyond conducting, Larsson is an accomplished organist and composer, serving as 2nd organist at Holmen’s Church (The Royal Naval Church) in Copenhagen. He is also a passionate music communicator and regularly presents programmes on Danish National Radio, DR P2.
