Junping Qian is an internationally acclaimed conductor known for his natural musicianship, captivating interpretations, and strong rapport with orchestras.
He has won major prizes at the Bucharest, Lovro Matačić, Hans von Bülow, and Princess Astrid conducting competitions. During 2024-2026, Junping Qian serves as the Principal Guest Conductor of Satu Mare Philharmonic Orchestra Dinu Lipatti.
Other notable activities include a China Tour with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Teatro del Giglio Lucca, his South American debut with Orchestra SODRE in Montevideo, Uruguay, his North American professional debut with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Other debuts coming up with orchestras throughout Scandinavia, the UK and Germany.
From 2018 to 2020, he served as Assistant Conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Strategic Advisor to the Shanghai & RCM London Joint Institute. He currently serves as Principal Guest Conductor of the Satu Mare Philharmonic (2024–2026) and Assistant Conductor of Orchestre de Paris (2022/23).
In 2023/24, Qian debuted with the BBC Symphony, China National Symphony, and Shanghai Symphony orchestras. He has led the Minnesota Orchestra’s Lunar New Year concerts since 2022 and recently completed a Brahms cycle with the China NCPA Orchestra. His engagements include the Guangzhou Opera House, Morningside Music Bridge, and international debuts across North and South America.
Qian studied conducting at Curtis, Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin, and with Otto Werner Mueller, Daniel Harding, Sir Roger Norrington, and Christoph Eschenbach. Originally an award-winning violist, he held a tutti position with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra before dedicating himself fully to conducting. He is a recipient of the Bruno Walter Scholarship and supported by the Solti Foundation.
