Toby Thatcher

Conductor


The Australian/British conductor Toby Thatcher is known for his dynamic and forward-thinking approach to classical music. He is the Artistic Director of Zeitgeist and the Nineteenth Circle, as well as Assistant Conductor of the Orchestre National d'Île-de-France.

Toby has worked with ensembles internationally including Orchestre National de France, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Modern, London Symphony Orchestra (a side-by-side with Guildhall School of Music students), Orchestre National d’Île-de-France, Ensemble Musikfabrik, Krakow Philharmonic, Sinfonietta Cracovia, Slovenian Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonieorchester Basel, Auckland Philharmonia, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra & the Australian Youth Orchestra.

He has held Assistant Conductor positions with the Orchestre National de France, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, & Orchestre national d’Île-de-France, and been Guest Assistant Conductor to the London Philharmonic Orchestra & Philharmonia Orchestra. He received mentorship under Peter Eötvös, and a Conducting Fellowship at the Cabrillo Festival with Cristian Măcelaru.

An accomplished speaker and musician, Toby has appeared on BBC Radio 3 and the ABC and has been invited as a guest speaker by institutions such as the Royal Academy of Music. He holds an MA in Music Performance and has performed as an orchestral musician with the London Philharmonia and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
